Covenant Terms

"introduction"

the hidden Language of covenant

Do you see covenant everywhere when you read the Bible? You would if you were able to spot its many references. The Bible does not use the word ‘covenant’ every time covenant is spoken of. The Scriptures were not written with an index or a glossary of terms. If a glossary existed for ‘covenant’, it would include terms such as:

      • I in you, and you in me.
      • United.
      • In the same image
      • Exchanged robes.

These above terms along with many others often refer either to a covenant being made or being in place. One reason covenant is not explained in the Bible is because in the days when it was written everyone knew the process and the terminology of covenant making. Thus, only a reference was necessary for everyone to understand. Another reason it is not clearly and concisely explained is because it is one of God’s hidden jewels of truth. It has been carefully hidden so those whose hearts belong to Jesus Christ will see it and the rest will not. Only those who have crucified their fleshly nature will see God’s hidden truth in the Bible.

He who believes [the one who has repented and received the Holy Spirit] in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life [the Truth], but the wrath of God abides on him.” (John 3:36)

This verse is pure covenant. You should understand that the one who believes is not the person who says he or she believes, or thinks they are a believer because they said a prayer or signed a card or had been baptized in water. In this verse, the one who believes is said to have eternal life. The way to obtain eternal life is to be born again. And the way to be born again is by making covenant with Jesus Christ. This is also the way one receives the Holy Spirit. Also notice that the one who believes is also the one who obeys. And the the wrath of God, i.e., the curses of God’s righteous judgment, abides on the one who does not obey.

We find the following in John’s gospel.

Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again [one who has repented and made covenant with Jesus] he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)

Please note that being born again is not something that comes about because of some sort of religious practice. One must make covenant with Jesus Christ to be born again. That means one must repent. True repentance has been described in previous lessons.

Paul wrote the following to believers in Corinth.

3 And even if our gospel is veiled [containing hidden meanings], it is veiled to those who are perishing [being destroyed by the curses of God’s righteous judgment],
4 in whose case the god of this world [Satan] has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. [Jesus being the image of God means they are one, united by covenant.] (2 Corinthians 4:3-4)

Paul says the gospel he preached was veiled and hidden from those who had not gained eternal life but are perishing. Then in verse four we see that Jesus is the image of God. Again, these verses are all about covenant. The gospel Paul preached, like all of the Scriptures, is presented in parable form. One must be born again and have the Holy Spirit to understand what is written.

Here’s another example from the gospel of Matthew:

And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6)

When you read of two becoming one there is a very good chance you are reading about a covenant being in place or about to be made.

The Bible is all about covenant. But covenant isn’t seen everywhere because the Bible is written in parables. And only those who have repented by sacrificing their entire spiritual life to make covenant with Jesus have received the Holy Spirit. These are the ones who understand all of the parables through Holy Spirit revelations of truth.

It is the task of those who are born again, who have the Holy Spirit dwelling within, to seek His guidance and revelations of truth. It is true that all who seek will find what they are looking for. When we seek in conjunction with the Holy Spirit He show us all of the hidden nuggets in the text of the Bible.

The purpose of the covenant study found in the remaining lessons on this web site is to demonstrate by example that the Bible does indeed contain hidden truth. My hope is that you will believe that if He showed some of this truth to me, he will also show this and many other portions of the truth to you and to all who seek to find it for God is no respecter of persons.

May your spiritual eyes and ears be opened to see and hear the hidden truth of the parables in the Bible,

So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” — John 8:31-32
